Good morning and welcome to our Family Service. The speaker this morning is Andrew Shepherd who was a member of the church that Gordon pastored in Stockport and where Andrew took Wednesday bible studies and regularly preached on Sundays. He now worships at a church in Lostock, Poynton. Andrew and his wife, Marie, have three children and grandchildren.
Andrew will speak to us about ‘The Offence of the Cross’ and will be looking at Galatians 5 as he brings God’s message to us today. Galatians 5 tells us that Christ died to set us free from sin and from a long list of laws and regulations. Christ came to set us free – not free to do whatever we want because that would lead us back into slavery to our selfish desires. Rather, thanks to Christ, we are now free and able to do what was impossible before – to live unselfishly. But it is also wrong to put a burden of law keeping on Christians. We must stand against those who would enslave us with rules, methods, or special conditions for being saved, or for growing in Christ.
‘May I never boast except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, through which the world has been crucified to me, and I to the world.’”
Galatians 5 (NIV)
